Mode structure and the envelope of a high-power pulse in an asymmetric graded-index waveguide layer
Bisyarin M.A.

We consider a weakly nonlinear process of propagation of a modulated pulse with high-frequency filling in a plane graded-index waveguide layer. The transverse distribution of the refractive index is determined by the piecewise-smooth function of the hyperbolic-secant type with different parameters. Due to this, the analysis includes not only the asymmetry of the waveguide layer, but also various properties of the shell to the both sides of the layer. Longitudinal inhomogeneity of the radiated waveguide structure is also acceptable. The transcendental characteristic equation has been derived to determine the mode propagation constants, and the transverse wave fields are expressed in terms of a hypergeometric function. Numerical calculations demonstrated the possibility of the mode cutoff due to the asymmetry of the waveguide layer. The nonlinear Schr{o}dinger equation has been derived for the pulse envelope with the coefficients corresponding to the asymmetric waveguide layer.
